Hayley Voices Antigone
HH client HAYLEY ATWELL has lent her voice to a recent Audible production of The Oedpius Plays, in which she plays the timeless role of Antigone in two of Sophocles' three Theban plays: Oedipus At Colonus and Antigone.
The plays were written around 450 BC and tell the story of Oedipus, King of Thebes, who was destined to suffer a terrible fate - to kill his father, marry his mother, and beget children of the incestuous union. He does this unknowingly but still has to suffer terrible consequences, which also tragically affect the next generation.
HAYLEY says: “My background is in classical theatre...When you are part of an acting community as we have been [whilst] recording the Theban plays, you also realize you are part of a tradition that has been passed down — and hopefully we will continue to pass it down to the next generation. It is a way of keeping these texts alive.” In her opinion, Sophocles’ works translate especially well to the audiobook format. “These particular plays… were written to be heard, first and foremost,” she says. “Seeing them was kind of secondary. That’s why [they’re] so wordy — nothing very visual happens!”
