Michael gave many performance readings of his novel, The Giro Playboy over a 3-4 year period; venues included the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Haye On Wye, and a fortnightly residency at the Whitechapel Gallery.

He subsequently narrated the 3 series he wrote and presented for BBC 4, “Citizen Smith”, a 6 part road movie “Drivetime” and `"A Journey Back to Newcastle."

He is a regular contributor to BBC2's The Culture Show. They have broadcast many of his films including his critique of the Skin exhibition, which numbered one of The Culture Show's Best of 2010 programmes.

A third novel is due in 2011. It explores the dynamics of relationships between women and men, "or more accurately", as Smith quipped on BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends programme, "women and me".
